Used To


In this usage, the expression used to means the same as would. Used to is always in this form; it can NEVER be use to.

Pattern: Subject + used to + [verb in simple form] …

· Example: When Bella was young, she used to swim once a day. (past time habit)

Compare with this sentence: When Bella was young, she would swim once a day.

Also there are two grammar rules for used to. Notice the difference in meaning as well as in grammar.

1. BE USED TO

Be used to means to be accustomed to.

Pattern: Subject + [be] + used to + [verb + -ing] …

Example: Edward is used to swimming every day. (He is accustomed to swimming every day.)

2. GET USED TO

Get used to means to become accustomed to.

Pattern: Subject + [get] + used to + [verb + -ing] …

Example: Edward got used to swimming every day. (He became accustomed to swimming every day)
